ISF World School Championships

Take off with the opening ceremony Sunday.

- Difference Makes it Difficult
They come from one of the most prestigious High Schools in Finland, the Mäkelänrinteen Lukio in Helsinki, and they know that their school has a long and successful history in different sports. Mäkelänrinteen Lukio combines education and twelve different sports, and orienteering is one of them.

Jannina Gustafsson, Jenna Laukkarinen, Maaret Turunen, Marika Suonimen and Pihla Otsamo know that –- despite of the long standing orienteering tradition of the Scandinavian countries – they are not among the top favourites of these ISF World School Championship.

- I was here during the Junior World Championships in 2009, taking part in the OL week, Turunen says. - Therefore I, and we all, know that the racing area is quite different from what we are used to. This difference makes it difficult for us.

Laukkarinen adds: - In Finland, generally speaking, the country is flat. Here it is mountainous, very nice and beautiful, but unusual for us. There isn’t even the slime that we normally have.

The girls want to make good and new orienteering experiences, says Otsamo; Gustafsson and Suominen are also looking forward to this adventure:

- We want to make new contacts and friends in the international orienteering scene. We will fight against each other during the races, but we are all friends, in a true sporting spirit!
