IOC:
- Blogging and Social Media Guidelines

OL - Vancouver, 12.-28. februar

Blogging and Social Media Guidelines for Athletes and Accredited Persons – A summary

The IOC actively encourages spectators, athletes and others to take part in Social Media and to post their experiences. Broadly speaking we want people to share their experiences and share their still photos, as long as this is done without commercial gain and does not contravene the Olympic Charter.

Clearly for athletes and their entourage – particularly in the Olympic Village in the run up to and during the Games - the rules need to be a little more stringent so as not to affect the special atmosphere. All athletes need the opportunity to prepare for the Games free of interference and be able to focus on the competition without distraction.

We encourage athlete to blog and tweet during the Olympic Games, and it is entirely acceptable for an athlete, or any accredited person, to do a personal blog.

It should be in a first-person, diary-type format and should not be in the role of a journalist. (Clearly there should be no payment or sponsorship involved in any activity).

Because of the environment we need to be more restrictive with the posting of photographs taken in the Olympic Village and Competition Venues: Photos can be included of the athletes in the Olympic Village and Competition Venues, except those that show competition or ceremonies. If any other persons appear in the photo, their permission must be given.

Video is acceptable as long as it is not taken in Olympic areas and is not of any event.

A Tweet is regarded in this respect as a short blog and the same guidelines are in effect.

Commercial association with a blog, Facebook site or twitter puts this in a different category and is not acceptable under any circumstances.

Summary for athletes: All text is fine – it should be personal. Photos within the Village etc should be personal and permission must be given by others. Video cannot be posted which has been filmed in Village or Competition areas.
